The production of composite components in an autoclave is also referred to as a “baking process”. A vacuum of -0.9 to -0.2 bar is applied to the composite workpieces packed in tubular film. After closing the autoclave, the composite components are baked for around 4 hours at a pressure of 6-10 bar at 120°C to 180°C.
Once the baking process is complete, the composite components must be unpacked and demolded. The workpieces are then trimmed using a CNC machine or by hand. If necessary, holes are also drilled in the composite components in this step.
Depending on the composite component, workpieces still have to be assembled after demolding. This means that the components have to be assembled, glued or riveted, for example. In the case of our carbon rear wings, for example, we still attach the side shells and feet to the aluminum.
We also refer to the final polish on our composite components as the “finish”. During finishing, any dust inclusions are removed. The workpieces are polished and handed over for final inspection after preparation.
