What is carbon used for in motorsport?
Carbon fiber tuning parts are particularly popular in motorsport for many reasons. Due to its elegant look, carbon is often used in purely optical tuning Application. In motorsport, however, carbon components are mainly used to increase performance. After hardening, the carbon parts are extremely dimensionally stable and resilient. This makes the fiber composite the ideal material for high-performance sectors such as motorsport. However, the absolute biggest advantage is the low weight of carbon components in motorsport. Consisting of epoxy resin and carbon fibers, CFRPs have a density of just 1.55 g/cm³. This is almost half the density of aluminum (2.7 g/cm³). Such a much lower weight is of course essential in motorsport.
