What is a fiber composite material?
A fiber composite is a material that consists of certain fibers embedded in a matrix. Fiber composites are therefore also called “composite materials” or simply “composites”. The properties of the resulting composite material are better than those of the individual pure material. Depending on the fiber used, different fiber composites with very different properties are created.
What fiber composites are there?
We are mainly CFRP and GFRP manufacturers, but we also produce parts from natural fiber and aramid fiber-reinforced plastics.
CFRP – Carbon fiber reinforced plastics
Carbon fiber or carbon fiber-reinforced plastics are composite materials in which carbon fibers are interwoven with a plastic matrix consisting of epoxy resin, for example. Carbon fiber-reinforced plastics are manufactured in particular for areas where high robustness and rigidity are required at low weight. CFRP is therefore used, for example, in cycling and motor sports but are also used in shipbuilding and aircraft construction.
GRP – Glass fiber reinforced plastics
Glass fiber reinforced plastics, or GRP for short, is a composite material made from plastics such as epoxy resin or polyamide and glass fibers. Sometimes this fiber composite material is also referred to as “fiberglass”. Although glass fiber-reinforced plastics are not particularly rigid, they are highly resistant to corrosion. For this reason, GRP is often used for the construction of containers or boat hulls. When used with a suitable plastic matrix, GRP is also a very good material for the production of insulators and switch cabinets for outdoor use.
AFK – Aramid fiber reinforced plastics
Although the production of aramid fiber-reinforced plastics is significantly more expensive than the production of other fiber composites such as glass fiber composites, AFK offers great advantages. Components made from aramid fiber-reinforced plastics are highly stress-resistant (impact and abrasion-resistant) and have exceptionally good chemical resistance. In addition, AFK components are particularly light. Due to these properties, aramid fiber composites are often used in aircraft and vehicle construction.
NFK – Natural fiber reinforced plastics
Like the other composite materials we produce, natural fiber-reinforced plastics often consist of an epoxy resin or polyamide matrix and the fiber material, in this case natural fibers. In the production of natural fiber-reinforced plastics, we usually use the natural fibers flax, hemp, jute and sisal. The production of NFRP from other natural fibers is of course possible. The natural fiber gives the fiber composite material special stability. NFRP is mainly used for cladding components in vehicles, but is also becoming increasingly popular for decorative purposes inside and outside the vehicle.
